Recording Artist: Jonny Taylor
What inspired your new song?
There’s a pretty special woman I’m kind of feeling. So this song became a combination of slick talk & the pursuit of a deeper level of connectedness to get that special person. Recipe: a hint of that 90’s Hip Hop & R&B feeling coupled with a sprinkle of today’s vibe. I’ll let you know if it works LOL.
Describe your writing process?
I literally recorded my lyrics in my Kia Soul on my laptop. Then I sent the studio session to my producer Madd Scientist to do the mixing and mastering. A lot of studios are closed out here in Los Angeles because of Covid. So we are finding ways to work around it. My producer provided the track with the hook already placed, It wasn’t the hardest to have art depict my real life with this one.
Do you have a video?
I invested in a lot of green screens, lighting and a Canon Camera. I have a video concept in mind and should have a visual in about 2 weeks.
How do you stand out as an artist?
I think featuring plus-size women has been a hook over the years. I inject my actual personality into my visuals and recordings. People always say there’s something different about my music, but could never identify what it is. Spoiler: there’s no explicit lyrics and average person sensibilities that average people can identify with. I also took (and take) a number of digital marketing classes and apply what I learn. Being open to new strategies and remaining teachable helps!
Who are you listening to right now?
Noah Jones, Nas, and Diamond D, I like the new Public Enemy album, too
Who are some of your influences?
EPMD, De la Soul, Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Positive K, Ice Cube, Diamond D.
What gets you up in the morning?
I’ve lost 80lbs so I am focused a lot more on fitness. Since gyms are closed, I invested in a treadmill and bike for the garage. Always driven to be better than the day before somehow. Trying not to live my life one snack at a time, but I’d be lying if I told you I don’t miss a good donut or taco.
What’s next for you?
As of this writing, dinner! Macroscopically, I’m working on visuals for a few songs. Handle It releases Nov 9. It will be distributed by Universal Music Group. I also have a distribution arrangement with Orchard (Sony Music). I had a release that was supposed to drop in the Spring to accompany the college shows I was booked for. That 5 song release will come out December 1.
